The Great Gardens of Cornwall 30 Years Film
Brief
There are projects you’re proud to deliver, and then there are those that feed your creative soul. As a Cornish agency, the opportunity to create a film to celebrate 30 Years of The Great Gardens of Cornwall was more than just a commission, it was a calling.
This was, without a doubt, a dream brief; 14 extraordinary gardens, three decades of shared history, and rich tapestry of storytelling told by those who know them best – the owners and the head gardeners.
From the outset, we knew this wasn’t going to be simply a film about gardens. It deserved to be a story unfolding through time, steeped in history yet also reflective of the gardens’ role as platforms for environmental advocacy, and green spaces in which our relationship with the natural world can be reimagined.
Our creative concepts grew around the ideas of custodianship and unity amongst diversity, the common threads that bind these gardens together. Our goal was to create a film that held space for conversation and thought leadership, and had the potential to reposition The Great Gardens brand nationally, reach new audiences, and open the door for future production opportunities.
And so we embarked upon an exploration of fellowship, of people, and of places; united by a common purpose, to preserve, protect, and inspire.
The Plot
We started with strategy and questions, the kind that unlock stories. What drives someone to dedicate their life to a garden? What does it mean to care for plants that will outlive you? We worked closely with the gardens to uncover themes and voices that would become the heart of the film.
Filming took place across two seasons – late summer 2024 and early spring 2025. From Trewithen to Heligan, Bonython to Trewidden, we captured not just b-roll and beauty shots, but the real soul of the gardens: the people who shape them, and are shaped by them in return. The atmosphere was everything, and in the quieter moments, voices told stories that spanned generations.
What happened next?
Post-production was an exercise in reverence. Hours of raw footage, whittled down and woven into a compelling twelve-minute feature. Editing, sound design, colour grading – each layer crafted with care. We also created a high-impact trailer one-minute to generate buzz in the lead-up to the full release.
The film premiered at an exclusive 30 Year celebration at The Cornwall Garden Society Spring Flower Show – a proud moment for all involved, and a fitting stage for a project grounded in shared vision.
Since the launch, the film has taken on a life of its own. It’s found a home on the Great Gardens of Cornwall website and YouTube, and has been featured in numerous newsletters, and shared widely across social media. Each of the 14 gardens has access to use it in their own digital storytelling, and the seed we planted is still growing…
Looking Forward
As part of the longer-term strategy, we used the film as kindling for conversions with TV and Film production companies, laying the groundwork for what we hope might one day become a full-length documentary or series. The response has been promising, proof that stories from The Great Gardens of Cornwall are worthy of a national (if not global) audience.
We believe in the power of creative work to bring people closer to the places and subjects they love, or haven’t yet discovered. To be entrusted with telling the story of the iconic Great Gardens was a true privilege. For us, this wasn’t just film production, it was strategic, purpose-driven and from the heart.
…and if you ask us, that’s the kind of work that makes a difference.
